These boots are made for walking - Leckhampton Hill

The sun was shining at the weekend and summer was peeping round the corner so we went for a lovely walk in Leckhampton near Cheltenham.

We walked along the Cotswold Way to the top of Leckhampton Hill among a disused quarry and had some stunning views of Cheltenham and the surrounding areas.

Along with having amazing scenic views, we also spotted Devils Chimney, a 19th century stone pillar made by local quarrymen so they could show off their agility by climbing it.  Although climbing now is forbidden, tradition used to be that a coin had to be placed on the top to appease the devil, which is how it got it's name.

We even saw a man paragliding

Althought I don't think he was much of an expert after watching him crash into a tree!

I found a local gnome...

and Dusty took in the views...

Then we walked through a small and sparse forest area before walking around a mile up the road and back to the car.

Distance: 3.5 Miles

Duration: 1 Hour 45

Dogs: Okay off lead most of the time but kept under control.  On the lead on roads.

Landscape: Disused quarry and surrounding area.  Some rocky areas underfoot.

Difficulty: Fairly easy with a few mild ascents.

Rating: ***/**

Mini Cupcakes

I think we can all agree that an interest in baking cupcakes can mean an expanding waistline when you have no self control!

That's why Mini Cupcakes are definatly the way forward!

Cupcakes the size of a £2 coin are still just enough to satisfy your craving for sweet goodness and you can make more that twice the amount... which keeps your work colleagues happy!

Great advice - Art or graffiti?

I saw some graffiti on the wall of a side street roday and I got to thinking;

When does graffiti become art?
What is art?

Is it when the creator has a motive or a reason behind the work?
Is it when the audience viewing the work likes what they see?

People are continually challenging the boundries of art.
We only have to look at the work of controversial conceptual artist Damien Hirst to see examples of people (artists?) challenging the concept of art by using sometimes shocking methods.

Mother & Child Divided              The Acquired Inability to Escape

Some may say that his more intense work is absurd.
Others may view it as inspirational and misunderstood.

Do 'artists' feel the need to challenge art or is the work they create something they believe in?
Or does this vary artist to artist?

When we look at expressionist artist Jackson Pollock, in my opinion there are signs of an art challenger!
Pollock created paintings in a way that people had never really seen before.
Was he an innovator or an art challenger?

Is something only art if the audience has a chance to make an interpretation?

Should we stop looking for answers or is that just human nature and something we will never allow ourselves to do?

If I stand in a museum and switch a light on and off while people are watching, would this be art?
If the answer is 'yes' then is it still art if I do the same thing in my own home?
Is everything in the confines of the museum walls classed as art?
Should we be told that something is art?

Surely we should all decide for ourselves what we feel is artistic and not be told what to think?

Does art have to be something we enjoy looking at or experiencing or can it be art even if we don't like it?
Is art only art if it evokes an emotion, be it positive or even negative?
Does art have to make the viewer feel something for it to become art?

Science and knowledge can proove certain things, but the question of art cannot be so easily defined.

So many questions and I don't think there will ever be an answer.

In summery, in my opinion...

Art is whatever you want it to be regardless of it's confines and it's beauty or lack of.

So here is the art/graffiti that prompted my many questions...

The creator / artist wanted to send a message.
This wasn't just mindless scribbling.
The artist had a stencil and thought about what he / she was doing before putting ink to wall.
It wasn't something that they did with no motive or thought.

I wish I could find out who put this message on that wall, or maybe the mystery is the interesting thing!

Why this message?  Why this wall?

I think it's especially interesting the way such encouraging and positive words are painted in such a dark and contradictory fashion.

Do you think this is art?

Do you have answers to my otherwise un answered questions above?

Super Dooper Spring

I love the spring time.  It's a preview of the summer and a chance to come out of hibernation and get that washing outside on the washing line at last!

With the sun shining I thought it was the perfect time to be outdoors and sew some more vegetable and herb seeds as my broccoli and sprouts from last month haven't done the best, it's time to try again.

Hopefully this year we will have delicious home grown Potatos, Broccoli, Brussel Sprouts, Tomatos, Basil, Chives, Parsley, Sage and 3 varieties of Carrots!

There's some beautiful colours starting to show in the garden too.

Of course Dusty was on standby to help in the garden as always! :)

Then time for a snooze...

The big 3-0

So I'm having a 30th Birthday get together with my closest friends and family in the summer and I decided make my own invitations.

I ran through a few ideas in my head before settling on the idea of using crochet '30's' and with help from the amazing and inspirational crochet artist Howie Woo (http://www.woowork.com/) I made crochet tubes, inserted pipe cleaners and voila... bendy numbers to stick on my home made invitations!

Each invite is slightly different.  Can you see yours?

Brrrrrrrilliant!

Look what I found in my fridge...

Still, at least he'll be happier in the cold!
